The Importance of Disinfection at tooth+
Here at tooth + we are committed to being at the forefront of clinical hygiene and disinfection. We understand that the prevention of cross infection in dentistry today is imperative to the personal safety of all that enter tooth+.
Our clinical teamwash their hands up to 30 or 40 times a day (sometimes more) as part of our disinfection regime.
We use specialised Schülke dental hygiene products which have a proven track record. During a day in practice, no instrument is as much in focus as your hands with regard to hygiene. Anyone in constant contact with devices and patients requires the very best antimicrobial protection as well as skin protection.
We give you our assurance that our disinfection programme in the clinic is of paramount importance to us.
We recently had a briefing session with sterilising/decontamination experts from Shulke who came to share their specialized knowledge with our clinical team. The session provided really useful and reinforced the importance of our commitment to our disinfection regime be it hands, equipment or surfaces.
The session confirmed that we are definitely at the forefront of cross infection control and it will remain a key priority for the entire team.

tooth+ NAMED UK & SCOTLAND’S BEST DENTAL PRACTICE
We are delighted to have been named the UK’s Best Dental Practice and Best Practice Scotland at The Dentistry Awards 2011.
The practice won the coveted titles due to its customer-focused approach to dentistry – providing a contemporary yet relaxed environment that ensures even the most nervous of patients enjoy visiting the dentist.
This is fantastic news not only for tooth+ but for Scottish dentistry as a whole. We secretly hoped we might pick up the Scottish award but never dreamt we’d be short-listed and win the UK’s top dental accolade.
The surgery has maintained a high standard of patient care because the focus has always been on providing patients with the latest techniques and best care plans.

Preventing tooth decay in children
Decay results when plaque, bacteria and foods cause an acid attack. The decay begins to attack the tooth and can result in a filling or even complete removal of the tooth.
How can it be prevented?
Brushing teeth
As soon as teeth erupt they should be brushed twice daily. The parent/guardian should brush or supervise. Children should spit out after brushing but not rinse.
It is important that your child’s toothpaste contains fluoride such as:
Up to 3 years 1,000 ppm fluoride
3-7+ years 1,350-1,500 ppm fluoride
If your child is at a higher risk your dentist may recommend a higher dose of fluoride toothpaste.
Regular check ups
It is important that your child attends your dentist regularly for check ups to make sure no decay has formed or is developing. A fissure sealant may be placed on the permanent molar teeth in the crevices to prevent decay forming. Sometimes a high fluoride varnish can be applied to the child‘s teeth to strenghten and add extra fluoride. A mouthwash or fluoride tablets may also be prescribed for your child if recommended by the dentist.
Which foods and drinks?
Limit sugary foods/drinks as much as possible between meals. Snacking though out the day will increase the risk of further acid attacks on the teeth. If your children must eat sweets it is better to eat them at once rather than spaced out during the day. Try alternative sugar free options like cheese, milk or fruit and vegetables.

Feeling nervous of the dentist?
Many of our patients arrive feeling apprehension towards their first visit. They are often nervous about meeting the dentist for the first time and seeing the dreaded dental chair. Patients often worry about how much treatment will cost and how much disruption the treatment will be to their lifestyle.
Here at tooth+ we like to do things differently. First of all you will be welcomed by a relaxing contemporary environment that feels nothing like your usual dentist. Friendly, welcoming staff offer you a cup of freshly ground coffee and the dentist takes time to discuss what your expectations and hopes are before even starting to look at your teeth.
Following a gentle yet thorough examination, we will take time to discuss with you what the problems are (if any) and what solutions are available to you. We will do our best to accommodate your needs both financially and practically. From offering free finance to evening appointments we will endeavour to make the treatment as relaxing and stress free as possible.
Comfortable neck pillows, soft music and the very best in modern gentle techniques all enhance the experience. Our patients always leave with a beaming smile on the faces and often tell us how relaxing their appointment was.
So relax, you’re at the dentist and it’s not just any dentist but……

Why Should I Floss?
As well as brushing your teeth twice a day, it is very important to floss daily. Brushing will only remove the plaque bacteria from the front and back of your teeth but misses the areas in between. Flossing removes the sticky substance of plaque which adheres between the teeth and gumline, where gum disease often begins. By flossing daily it decreases your chances of developing gum problems and forming decay (fillings).
Which type of floss?
Dental floss can sometimes shred so using one which is waxed coated or a dental tape will prevent this problem. Floss picks are also available which can be easier if you find flossing difficult.
How to Floss?
1. Wrap the floss around your middle fingers about 18” to 24” will be long enough
2. Hold the floss between your thumb and forefingers, leaving about an inch of floss between your hands.
3. Gently work the floss between your teeth, make sure you take the floss under the gum line curving like a “c shape” around the tooth
4. Glide the floss up and down each tooth, renewing the floss as needed
Your gums may bleed initially as they are inflamed due to the plaque bacteria but this will reduce as bacteria is removed and the gums heal.

We had a highly successful facial rejuvenation open evening on Thursday.
We were delighted to welcome Amanda Pook to tooth+. Amanda is a renowned laser therapist and she explained to us the amazing benefits of her laser treatments and showed us the radical results that can be achieved on aged, damaged, scarred or pigmented skin. Amanda will hold her first clinic here on 14 July so we are all very excited.
Rachael gave a short presentation on Sculptra and then treated us to a live botox demonstration. Our model was happy and everyone was pleasantly surprised at the quickness and ease of the procedure.
So thanks to everyone who attended and for those of you who didn’t manage to secure a place, we will hold a further open evening in September and make sure you are first on the guest list.
If you want to find out more give us a call on 01786 231123.
